«Istanbul psychedelia» — Baba Zula’s music unifies different styles from different decades. The Turkish trio plays traditional instruments such as the saz, a long-necked lute, and the goblet drum darbuka, amplifying and mixing them with electronic sounds. Their musical influences range from the Orient to the Carib- bean and to the London of the Swinging Sixties. But their gig is much more than just a concert: It’s a sensual and captivating musical celebration of the metro- polis of Istanbul, offering everything from Turkish rock to shamanic rituals. (ron)
