Kornél Mundruczó & Proton Theater

Szégyen / Schande

Nach dem gleichnamigen Roman von J. M. Coetzee

Szégyen / Schande

The radical Hungarian theatre director Kornél Mundruczó puts his audience through quite an ordeal: his hyper-realistic staging of physical violence and psychological cruelty pushes one’s tolerance to the limit. Nevertheless, Mundruczó’s purpose is not just blunt provocation. His latest work, an adaptation of J. M. Coetzee’s novel «Disgrace», is a merciless examination of the mechanisms of violence and the trauma of collective humiliation. «One might feel compelled by the brutal, sexualized force of Mundruczó’s directorial style — yet one cannot escape the sensual, or at least, powerful imager y of the Hungarian. His theatre calls for a response, reflection, a reaction.» Süddeutsche Zeitung (esc)
