King Pepe & Le Rex — the odd but perfect musical match. King Pepe, Bernese singer, trumpeter and banjolele player and a self-declared jazz dilettante, nonchalantly goes on at length about his problems with drink and jealousy on his latest album, recorded in big-band style. The four wind players and drummer of Le Rex, on the other hand, are seasoned jazz musicians with a love of adventure. Together they create a fresh and cheeky sound in the style of the Roaring 20s, which swings perfectly to Pepe’s songs — conspiratorial and full of rhythm and melody. (ron)
